I would play a little bit with this file:
/opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/ldm/themes/ubuntu/greeter-gtkrc
then you have to rebuild the image...

or change the whole ldm theme (maybe there is a link problem):

I installed the edubuntu dvd with the live tsp server. It works really fine.
If the error keeps, i would regard the thin-client hardware (graphic). You
could try it with a VM. Did you check the local logs of the client chroot or
the server logs?
