I've got two identical thin clients, one runs slow whilst the other runs
fast.

The slow running client sometimes has trouble booting over the network.
Both thin clients have hard drives in them but I've configured them to
boot over the network in a diskless fashion. The hard drive can be
removed, which I've done as a test.

When the slow computer finally gets to the login screen and I log in it
takes a while before showing the tool bars, then it takes long while
(5minutes) before showing the icons on the background. Whilst this is
happening I cannot start a session of nautilus.

The specs
The thin clients are old desktop machines (not so old really).
ASUS P5KPL-CM
E8400 CPU
4GB Corsair DDR2 ram
Gigabit Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCIE ethernet controller (on board)
v1.0.0.5 (2008/04/07)

What I've tested
I log in as the same user on both thin clients (not at the same time,
boot one machine and login then shutdown, do the same with the other).

I've tested both thin clients with exactly the same set of cables
plugged into the same wall socket for the CAT6. The same screen,
keyboard and mouse where used.

I've ran the HDT (Hardware Detection Tool 0.3.6) and made sure that both
thin clients are running the same version of BIO and hardware, which
proved that they were both running BIOS version: 0517 rev: 8.12.

I swapped memory between the machines.

I've disconnected the all USB devices, CD-ROM & hard drive so all that's
left is the memory, CPU and motherboard with onboard ethernet.

What else is there?
Are there any debugging options I can put on the slow computer so I can
see what it's waiting for?

Michael
