Replying to my own post because I just stumbled across a post from back
in May, attached below. Looks like the solution.

Jeff

----------

after another few days of testing I found a workaround.
The cause of these problems seems to be the xorg-driver, not kde, gnome,
etc.

I created the file /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/X11/xorg.conf in the thin client image
with this contents:

Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AIGLX" "off"
EndSection

This switches off 3D-Acceleration for the X-Server of the thin client.

Additionally you have to configure in lts.conf:

X_CONF=/etc/X11/xorg.conf

This tells the X-Server to use this xorg.conf file.

This setup workes for my test environment. I currently don't have any
experience with other hardware (the thin client is VIA-based). It would be
interesting if it also works for you.

This whole wisdom is of course *not* base on my own knowledge. I found the
final hint here:

http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/kein-anmelden-mehr-moeglich-nach-upgrade-von-/#post-2264447

Unfortunatelly (for you :^) it's in german.

Viele Grüße
Helmut
