Hello all!

I would like to use LTSP specifically for exam settings in an introductory
computer science class. The students have learned some basic system
administration and programming under Linux on their personal laptops. Now I
would like to have them perform some basic tasks in a controlled setting (no
internet connection etc.) during an exam.

I was thinking that I should be able to set up such an environment by using
LTSP. However, the more I think about it, the more loopholes I see. Maybe
somebody else has already filled these and I would really appreciate your
comments! Honestly speaking, I am by no means much of an expert in this field
but I know the basic concepts. I have tinkered with a LTSP test set-up over the
last two years.

My goal is to have the students work individually on one and the same
(LTSP-)server without means of communication or file-sharing, just as if they
were working on individual machines without any connectivity. Googling did not
show any hint on how to achieve this so it is either too simple or more
complicated than what I imagine.
First I would like to restrict internet access for these users. I was thinking
of putting them into a group which should not have access to ... well what
exactly? I could probably restrict access to individual programs but that seems
a bit unsatisfactory. Is there any way to limit the out-going connections?
Then how about file sharing on the server? Would it be enough to take away
ownership of their home directories and change mode so that group and others
would have no rights on the folders?
Is there some other way of communication that I am over-looking? The kids are
very quick when it comes to picking up technical means leading to better grades
...

Thank you very much for your support!
