OK, I wasn't even aware of the keepalive line in /etc/hosts.allow. It was 
present on the server that's not having the problem, but not present on the one 
with the problem. I had to look up what the line means and from what I've found 
it seems to be what I'm looking for, i.e. it checks intermittently whether the 
client is still there and if it isn't it drops the connection. Is that correct?

I added it on my problem server. I get the impression that after waiting two 
hours or so I should see my stale connections disappear so I'll know for sure 
then.

So, assuming that this really is my problem, thanks Michael for responding! I 
wasn't having the same problem you were but you put me on the right track.
