So, the issue with compiz is that it checks the server's Xserver log
to determine compatibility (which is of course, the wrong place to
look for a thin client).

So, here are things you can do:

1. Install compiz in the chroot. There is already code in LDM to check
if compiz is in the chroot and to use it to determine compatibility
and force the server to use compiz
2. Now, if the server IS compatible with compiz, while the clients are
NOT, that's when you run into problems. So, here are some choices:

  a. Do not run a GUI on the server  <-- look up many howtos on
disabling X from running on the server, and remove the Xorg log file
on the server
  b. Use a server that does not have a compiz-compatible graphics card


Unfortunately, current;y you can only tell the compiz script to FORCE
the use of compiz, but you cannot tell it to force it to NOT use
compiz through an environment variable. The bug has been reported but
nobody seems to care on the compiz side.
