Due to an unrelated situation, I'm moving one of our fat client labs to thin
clients for a more seamless environment. Since we have the RAM available in
our boxes (nearly a gig, at roughly 896mb) I wanted to utilize some local
resources. Users have told me Firefox and Libre Office are the popular ones
to localize. Okay, fine. So I set up a very small test lab here at home for
the weekend.
Server = Dell Laptop, Edubuntu 10.10 64 bit. Fresh install.
Client = Acer Netbook, 1gb RAM Atom Processor.
Connected via patch cable.
If I set up a fat image, the client works fine. Firefox works, I can get to
web sites, ping, etc. If I set up a thin chroot and install Firefox to the
chroot, update it, and boot the client, Firefox doesn't behave properly. It
opens as if there is no theme associated with Firefox. Secondly, it doesn't
open any web sites. It just spins and times out.
If I open terminal on the client (which is basically from the server), I can
ping fine. If I open a local xterm on the client, I can't ping. Something is
fouling out with the local apps at this point, and I can't seem to pinpoint
it.
Any suggestions?
I appreciate your time.
