Just to clarify this point - you benefit hugely from having gigabit between the server and the switch. The clients won't benefit from Gigabit unless they themselves have gigabit NICs. I only make this distinction, as I believe that fairly inexpensive switches are available that have a couple of gigabit ports and the rest just fast ethernet.
