I do't think so.
You only need to make them boot from the lan in any way.
The most comfortable (for you) is via BIOS but not all "old" 
motherboards are able to do it.

I use Debian stable (Squeeze), you just need to download the first CD.
Install it on a "normal" P4 with 1 GB of ram (possibly more), follow 
instructions from Debian Wiki and you'll have built a "poor-man" 
LTSP-laboratory.
It's slow but it works ok for young students.
