I fail to see how NLA could possibly improve the security of RDP.

Its just fine the way it is, so far as the box is patched for MS12-020 there should be no issues.
and no need for network level authentication.

Thanks for clarifying that. I knew it, but I realize my OP was somewhat ambiguous, so it needed to be pointed out.

I mentioned the recent vulnerability merely as context, because that's what prompted me to reconsider the security of our RDP setup, and if I'm not mistaken, Windows 8 (and presumably Windows Server 6.2 as well) requires NLA, so LTSP will require support for that when moving to the next generation of server, not to mention the immediate benefits of the improved security that NLA offers now.

Thanks much for the informative responses. It appears that freerdp supports NLA as of version 1.0, for which I would need Ubuntu 12.04 minimum (it takes a lot to lure me away from the repositories), so I look forward to experimenting in a month or so.
