I use Debian.
I believe the device is unmounted every few seconds, transparently to 
the user.
If you want to "unmount", you simply have to close all applications 
accessing the device and (gently) pull it off.
This also makes the desktop icon disappear in gnome, mate, or other 
desktop environments.
