Looks like the window manager is not running and sub-pixel hinting<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subpixel_rendering>has gone awry. The reason nothing appears when you type is because focus is not in the foremost window. When a window manager is not running, input goes to the most recently launched program, and not the foreground window as you'd expect.
