Hey all, Over the summer, I decided to switch to Xfce for a lighter-weight desktop experience. Unfortunately, I'm having a problem getting it working, just on my server.
Local users work fine, and LDAP users work fine using "su" or "ssh", but when I try to log in at the GUI with a user from the LDAP directory, the login screen disappears, the desktop wallpaper shows up, and the system hangs. Apparently, this is a known problem, since I found: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14983807/ldap-login-works-via-terminal-but-doesnt-work-via-gui https://bugs.launchpad.net/lightdm/+bug/944041 The fixes proposed in there don't seem to work. At this point, I'm considering re-installing the Ubuntu server image and then installing xubuntu-desktop or xfce, but I'm not sure that will work. It may be that the LDAP users will work fine on my clients, but students occasionally have to log in on the server, and I'd obviously like to get this working. Does anyone have any insight as to what's going wrong and the best way to go forward? I could also install Ubuntu and use GNOME Classic, I suppose... Thanks!
