I have a new installation of Edubuntu 12.04 on a 6 core amd with 16 gb of
ram.
Everything is working fine when logged into the server and at one client
station but none of the other clients will let anyone in. The users on the
"bad" clients do get authenticated but after authentication the screen is
returned to the initial login window requesting the username again.
Here is the really strange part ...
On the client that does connect correctly, any/all users registered in the
server can get in at it.
If I unplug the ethernet cable from it and plug it into another pc then no
one will be able to log in. I find that out as it is the same cable, same
switch, same server settings, same authentication that worked previously on
the one working client.
The only difference I can see is different mac addresses of the PC.
I worked back through with troubleshooting including swapping cables,
swapping swithes, restarting the server, and the clients etc and have
reproduced the symptoms multiple times, multiple pcs. I even considered
that the room had been hit by lightning and all the pcs but one were killed
so I tried my own laptop on the network and got the same results.
The server must have somehow gotten set to only accept a couple of mac
addresses and is canceling the login of any others even if the user is
authenticated.
Your help resolving this is sorely needed and greatly appreciated.
