long time ago I also started with an Igel client (don't remember the specs). I
sorted it out after some time because it became too slow, especially what
graphics concerned.
1GB RAM and 500MHz don't sound very recent.

RDP makes very much sense on LTSP. We have one M$-Windows Terminalserver 2003
in our network and all the Linux desktops can use Word, Exel, and friends as
applications with RDP from this server.
They just run a command like this (where wtsv is our Windows TS):

rdesktop -k de -z -d TZV -g90% -s "C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft 
Office\\Office14\\excel" wtsv

Works fine.
