Thinking again about Taco's remark on TTC fonts, I think the problem is not in TTC fonts generally, but in Apple supplied TTC fonts. So I suggest, instead of blacklisting all TTC fonts unconditionally, we should explicitly blacklist the problematic ones (or even all TTC fonts from Apple).
Also, such fonts should be blacklisted on all OSs; if they crash luatex on mac, then they will cash it elsewhere as well, the same goes for the LastResort font (I had it while ago, and it is available for free download from unicode.org, so it is not a mac-only font). We need some one with access to MacOSX to confirm this, by testing Cambria or other TTC fonts from MS etc. and to list all broken ones.
