Type1 fonts have been declared obsolete a decade or so before I touched
a TeX system, I never used them (apart from legacy TeX fonts) myself,
and they are pretty useless for any of my needs. The code we borrowed
from ConTeXt lacked the pfb/afm loading part since Hans too finds them
obsolete, and there is no much incentive for me to work on it.
