Works flawlessly for me. What Git version do you use?

$ git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/agladysh/lua-inih.git
Cloning into lua-inih...
remote: Counting objects: 58, done.
remote: Compressing objects: 100% (49/49), done.
remote: Total 58 (delta 12), reused 0 (delta 0)
Unpacking objects: 100% (58/58), done.

As for how it should be detected, I would suggest an optional explicit
download method field (i.e. "http", "git", "svn"...).

Alexander.
