Distributions can break things any way they please. I try to be
reasonable, but we can't go changing their defaults for all of them
and making emergency releases whenever Ubuntu decides to break the
world. I don't even think ld.so.conf.d is a standard directory. The
latest version of Binutils, 2.21.1, has no reference to it *at all* in
its sources or binaries (I just upgraded to the latest version,
vanilla build straight from the GNU tarball, just to be sure).
Fortunately, LuaRocks is already pretty flexible with regards to
lookup paths. Just set
external_deps_subdirs = {
bin = "bin",
lib = "lib/i386-linux-gnu",
include = "include"
}
runtime_external_deps_subdirs = {
bin = "bin",
lib = "lib/i386-linux-gnu",
include = "include"
}
in your ~/.luarocks/config.lua (or /etc/luarocks/config.lua, or
equivalent location as configured with --sysconfdir) and you should be
fine.
If the Ubuntu mantainers want to make a LuaRocks package with the
config.lua file adapted to the specificities of their distribution,
they are more than welcome to do so. That's what config.lua was
designed for.
