Sorry. The file I download doesn't match what I have in my build
directory...ah, because I committed some changes after uploading but
before sending the rockspec. Since I've automated sending the rockspec
in future, that should no longer be a problem.

In my opinion, no, but there's nothing I can do about this short of
removing them after installation. This has been debated by the libtool
maintainers before; I have specified why it might be a good idea, but
they have in the past resisted a patch to allow .la files not to be
installed.
