Yes, it is confusing!  The best education in this case is to grab a
few packages and see how their makefiles are integrated with the
rockspec.

Also, consider whether a 'built-in' specification will solve the
problem, it's a very flexible system and gives you much more
portability.  Even fairly involved builds like LuaSocket can be
rewritten to use it.

A fair number of the makefiles for rocks out there use GNU extensions,
which made me have to install gmake on FreeBSD. Also, if a package is
general and should work on Windows, then a makefile project will be an
obstacle.
