It does? I'm not sure I'm following correctly. The default
installation of LR uses /usr/local, exactly to avoid clashing with
packages installed by the OS package manager...

Again checking if I understood you right: what you originally
suggested was for LR to detect a Debian environment and to install
itself by default on top of (and with the same settings as) the LR
installed by Debian, right?

And yes, to avoid clashes it's always cleaner to use either the
package manager install or the "upstream" install, but not try to mix
both.
