Sorry about that. It was a long downtime in which the services got really flaky — after many attempts I could ssh to the machine, run some commands and then it would time out again. I kept trying to figure out what was happening, but we ended up having to reboot it. I don't even know if that was what did it (I was sick yesterday night and didn't check it later) but I woke up today (fortunately feeling better) and the site was back up. So I don't know if it was something in the machine, some attack or just unavailability from the VPS provider network (all I could detect was that the load average in the box was really high).
