it's a bug (the code runs ok in context but asserts in plain)

Probably this problem may be already known to you.
Not that one exactly, but I saw it coming, yes ;-)
There are likely more bugs like these, I'll do a thorough scan on
monday. Meanwhile, this one is patched by #1891.
