[luatex] too many open files

Hi,

when I run LuaTeX on a job, I now get

/<mypath>/12345.pdf: Too many open files

from an included image. The LuaTeX is a fairly recent one (built in march 
2012). How do I have to handle images?

I use img.scan{..} to load the images. Can this make the images to stay open 
and then to give the error message?

I know this is a vague question, but perhaps someone can still give me a hint.
