You are probably not allowed to use fonts shipped with 3rd-party
software. I strongly recommend to read the license before using a
font which is not part of TeX Live already. I fear that in most

We're talking about fonts that are considered "installed" under Windows,
and hence are shown in the font list of all Windows applications (Word,
etc.), not fonts shipped with 3rd party software. The example that
started the discussion was somebody using "Maintype"[1] to manage his
fonts[2].
in that case a copy in a tex tree is better (i don't put my text files
in the places the os likes most either)
the advantage of keeping files in the tree is that (1) one can create
backups easier and (2) move a tex tree to another machine without hassle
