Is it safe to use tex.outputmode = 1 in older versions of LuaTeX and
tex.pdfoutput = 1 in newer versions?
apart from possible bugs all backend related things are done in the
pdf.* functions; some backend concepts (image and reusable boxes) are
now in the frontend
(i'll check things the coming months)
