I can confirm the problem for windows and miktex. And this context
example (from a minimals of today) has wrong kerning too:

It has to do with the fact that only a few fonts currently provide math kerns (cambria does, as does lucida). The lm fonts use a mixture of (old school) fake width + italics to do kerning, and pagella has none of it. The next version of the gyre/lm fonts will be fixed in this respect. So, some patience is needed.
