[luatex] pdf adjustspacing 0.79 vs 0.85

question: how do I turn on font expansion with 0.85?

I get different output with LuaTeX 0.79 and 0.85, and I believe it is due to a 
different font expansion. In 0.79 I use

  tex.pdfadjustspacing = 2

and 

  expansion_factor = 1000

for each character.

Now running the same code with 0.85 it looks pretty much as if I write 
tex.pdfadjustspacing = 0 with 0.79, so without font expansion.

Question: how do I turn on font expansion with 0.85?
