I received an (off-list) message on this by Akira Kakuto, who advised me to use --shell-escape (whereas in TL 2019 this was not needed).
With this option the document compiles fine. But I believe that this is something that should be documented in TeXLive 2020. So, I can send a message to the TeXLive list, but someone should probably fill more technical details.
