Is it possible that you knocked off the IDE cable when you were messing with the memory? Maybe something came loose. Get into the system bios and verify if the HD is getting detected, every bios is different so you will have to look around. If not in the bios, just before post completes you should see something showing what was detected, like HD's cd's etc.. verify your HD is in there. Everything you currently describe seems much like a hardware issue.
