Warren, thanks for the help. I now remember learning about chown in books and manuals but had not used it; using that together with rm got rid of the huge "install" file. I finally managed to get Mdk 8.1 reinstalled and working and I think I now know how to get 8.2 going using a patch and a nopentium option. But before trying that again, I am going to save my important files and rpms to another machine or zip. I am now in KDE instead of Gnome; so will try again to empty the trash folder, but unfortunately the last time I tried, same problem, i.e. not having ownership of some files in there so the applet bombed; trouble is I do not know how to find trash on the command line; under /home/alvin there is trash, but Bash says it is not a directory and when I try to run it (./trash), it says I do not have permission. By the way, I now work for the state in the Adult Mental Health Division of DOH. When I get my home machine totally ok, I plan to start using it, or similar, at work. I am surprised when I chat with the MIS people that they are not interested in Linux. I would think, if the State as a whole, started phasing in Linux, perhaps starting with Apache servers, they could save a bundle. Thanks again.
