As with all MS products, Win2k puts it's bootloader on the first block of it's partition, not the MBR. It expects the DOS MBR to be in place, which will simply chainload the bootloader on whatever partition is marked "active". This is probably the better way to do it, though as long as you keep a DOS bootdisk with fdisk handy to run "fdisk /mbr" in case you screw something up, you should be fine.

This is what happened for me. Win2k might have put it's bootloader where it did instead of on the MBR because I already had lilo there, and maybe it assumed I had something like System Commander (a commercial bootloader by Norton I think) in place and didn't want to overwrite it. I've also reinstalled win2k before without it blowing away lilo (of course I had a bootdisk ready JIC).

How'd u get lilo to go into the mbr without it overwriting the win2k loader?
Or did you somehow get the win2k loader to go somewhere else?

When I tried to put lilo in the mbr (a while back) it appearently overwrote the
win2k bootloader, but that would be fine except
win2k crashed on boot every time. I solved the problem by booting from the win2k cd and
"repairing" the mbr. And afterwards taking
the steps I described earlier.
Did lilo evolve in the past year or so?

The dual boot was successful but I didn't use GRUB or LILO,
I am just booting into Linux from a floppy for now.

If you try to setup dual boot, do NOT put grub or lilo into the mbr as win2k
has a sick problem with it (it will not boot).

lilo on the MBR chainloading win2k bootloader just fine here...
