There is speculation that this is why HP asked Bruce Perens not to violate the DMCA during the Oreilly Open Source Convention last Friday. However I wouldn't worry too much because Bruce Perens is alerted. He will save the day... or we will drop HP/Compaq from our Linux friendly vendor list.
Bruce Perens only heard about this stupidity from news reports after he's at home and most of the company is asleep. He posted a few things to Slashdot saying the following: http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=37074&cid=3983995 Well, my job is keeping the company from doing stuff that makes its customers want to "vote with their wallet" as you do, or fixing the problem when that goes wrong. Give me some chance to do it. Bruce http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=37074&cid=3983588 Give me some time to investigate the situation, as this is the first I've heard of it - right here on Slashdot as I come home from dinner. HP is really still two companies in many ways - Compaq and HP will take a long time to become entirely integrated, and obviously tru64 is on the Compaq side. If this is real, I'll have some criticism for HP management. Bruce http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=37074&cid=3983906 I just woke up my boss and am in email correspondence with various other people. Obviously, a lot of the people involved are going to be unavailable until tomorrow morning. My terms of employment with HP allow me to publicly criticise the company when necessary. I'd rather help them fix the problem so that the criticism is all in the past tense, but the criticism will come if necessary. All I have to go on tonight is news reports. Thanks Bruce Also check out his homepage at http://perens.com. The following is from his Resume: Hewlett-Packard Corporation - 2000 to Present Senior strategist, Linux and Open Source. I am the first Open Source evangelist to gain a role in top management of a multi-Billion-dollar corporation. On the org chart there are only three people between me and the CEO - a general manager, a vice president, and a president. Among my assignments is to challenge HP management. Bruce Perens is truly an awesome guy. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, July 30, 2002 5:33 PM Subject: [luau] Info: HP Uses DMCA To Quash Vulnerability Publication > This was posted on /. > > Very scary article.. > > Aside from the DMCA flap, this part in the article caught my eye and is equally scary. >
