I think you might find ttmkfdir useful. It's like mkfontdir for truetype fonts. I have used an older version, and I don't know how well it's being maintained. It's now available at http://freshmeat.net/redir/ttmkfdir/10789/url_tgz/ttmkfdir.tar.gz .
Hope this helps,

I'm looking for a couple things regarding fonts to make my life easier when reading text (which is of course very frequent) in X:

An easy way (scripted) to set up truetype fonts. I've got CDs full of truetype fonts for windows. My X server has truetype support and I have Xft loaded, but setting up XftConfig and fonts.dir seem unautomated? mkfontdir won't set up fonts.dir for me.

A bunch of fonts (postscript, truetype, anything that XFree86 can read with no addons, other than truetype). One of the main things I'm looking for is a good monospace font with linedraw chars. I've got plenty of "Times" clones :)

Any suggestions are appricieated.
