Who said anything about reinstalling? Just keep your old kernel in lilo (and a bootdisk in case you mess lilo up) and you can boot your old, working kernel if you mess up.

The kernel howto is a good place to start.  Expect to make some mistakes
the first few times.  I compiled about 3 kernels before I got it right,
and this was on a 486 taking 4 hours every time :)
