With POP, once you have the message, it's safe and sound on your desktop. It can't be read or deleted off the server at a later time. With IMAP, these kinds of things are possible.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't use encrypted POP (speaking of crypto, RC5-64 takes about, oh, 1,757 days to break...see www.distributed.net :).
