And I'm in agreement, it sounds like the ide-scsi kernel module isn't
configured, and the bottom portion of your message makes little sense.

All you have to do is edit /boot/grub/grub.conf
and add the following to the end of the kernel line:
hd?=ide-scsi
only having scsi stuff, I would presume that hd? would refer to you're
cdrom?
just run: ls -al /dev/cdrom and replace the hd.. with the output
ie:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-14 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi

hd?=ide-scsi is a kernel option to be appended to the boot loaders
kernel argument line.

It's just a soft-link to /boot/grub/grub.conf, provided that GRUB is
installed at all. If LILO is used instead of GRUB, well, the problem
is obvious, and /etc/lilo.conf must be edited instead (and LILO be
re-installed).
