I recall the Samba documentation warning about oplocks used in conjunction with something like this. It has something to do with data integrity and Windows performance when using Samba mounted shares, but I don't remember exactly. Do the Google.
Actually, I only ask questions here after the google comes up dry or (as in this case) returns an ocean of garbage I can't wade across and I can't think of a way to narrow it down. But you've given me a good clue - with the word "oplock" added to the search, I came up with the following, from <http://us1.samba.org/samba/whatsnew/samba-2.0.4.html>:
" 5). Cross protocol data integrity --------------------------------- An open function interface has been defined to allow "opportunistic locks" (oplocks for short) granted by Samba to be seen by other UNIX processes. This allows complete cross protocol (NFS and SMB) data integrety using Samba with platforms that support this feature. " So apparently it's a question of whether my platforms support oplocks. In retrospect, just searching samba.org for "nfs" would have been a good idea. Thanks. Diligent Dave
