Thanks Monmotha! The information you have provided has been very helpful.
To get a little more specific, here is my current situation: I have a PCMCIA NIC (Netgear FA411), which was recognized by Debian Woody during installation. No drivers were required for installation and I was able to access the Internet with no problem. The "NE2000" driver was assigned to the NIC by Debian. That being the case, I wanted to see if I could install the driver on my own from the command line. I repartitioned my drive and installed Redhat 5.2. I assumed that if I could get the driver to work in an older version of Linux, that same knowledge could apply to more recent distributions. Anyways, the card was not recognized by Redhat 5.2 during the installation process. Afterwards, I attempted to install the "NE2000" module. However, I received "device or resource busy". Next, I attempted to "hit-or-miss" by using "insmod" on the various drivers within the /lib/modules/2.0.***/net directory to see if any would load or work. The tlan.o driver loaded, so I assumed that the driver would work, as oppossed to the other drivers, which gave me either "unresolved symbols" or "device or resource busy". Anyways, I could not get my NIC to work regardless, which is the reason for my previous post. Based on the above, I have come to the assumption that the "NE2000" module included with Debian Woody is not the same as the "NE2000" module included with Redhat 5.2. Given a specific module (ex: NE2000), does it change for each kernel upgrade? Anyway comments are very appreciated. P.S. Thanks for letting me know that my posts were in HTML Monmotha. I didn't realize I had it set to that.
