Maybe I don't quite understand, but I don't think you need the TV to be the 
*only* monitor in order to make a video tape. 

We have an ATI radeon graphics card that has an s-video output jack, we can 
send output to *both* our regular monitor and to a vcr/tv setup. I just 
rebooted it and watched the whole thing on the tv monitor, could have made a 
tape of it if anyone cared.
