Old Pentiums would function just fine offering non-GUI services. But, when someone mentions embedded Linux, I first think of the Sharp Zaurus. If you intend to use a GUI on an old system then you should seriously consider a lighter weight window manager. KDE is very feature rich and will slow down your system. -Vince
