Just remember to treat most certifications as a means to an end. Certifications help open doors if you do not have much experience or are applying to an organization that has a lot of red tape. If you simply want to learn Linux, each $100 or so you spend on a test could buy you 2 or 3 great books. One incentive of vendor certifications that I do not see enough of is providing a company with product discounts when they employ a certain number of people with the vendor certification. So even if you have the work experience, having/maintaining the certifications is an extra bargaining chip during the interview. Discounts on Red Hat Advance Server if an employee has an RHCE.
