You can use old non-sun cd drives all you want....here is a tech note on what it wants. Most cd drives have jumpers to reset the block size of the drive...especially older scsi-I drives.

SunOS 5 (or 4, for that matter) _will_ ask the cdrom what its block size is. OpenPROM won't. The difference is that you can use any CD-ROM with SunOS, but you can only boot off of ones capable of a 512 byte block size.
