It is when you can get GRE, IPSEC, or vserver patches that are known to merge cleanly against a recent kernel. Another advantage of make-kpkg is that it wraps all the extra commands you need to build and install a kernel. You can still download the kernel source from a debian mirror and skip the make-kpkg part. The only difference from grabbing from kernel.org would be that less keystrokes are involved. -Vince
