Wouldn't surprise me if I picked up a few bad habits along the way....I
almost never run strict....maybe I should start one of these days, if
nothing else but to straighten out my syntax...but then again why break my
existing code...:)

Relax. The bash reference was geek humor. Laugh.

But, fi is not valid syntax. It may work because you do not have
strict/warning set. Without warnings enabled, perl silently
ignores the errors.
