I dunno about tech manuals, but for novels, it IS true that free e-books prompt more people to buy the paper books. Go to baen.com and look at the free e-books available there; there's an essay on the site, by Eric Flint, about how _1632_, the book he put online, is his best-selling book. It looks like people read the e-book coz it's free and if they like it, decide they want the dead-tree version. Don't have statistics to back this up, of course. -- Karen Lofstrom
