btw, the machine in question is running Suse 8.2's crypto file system with
a twofish-encrypted reiserfs partition. I have root, but that doesn't
seem to matter in this case.
Nope, root doesn't matter at all. You *need* that crypto key. If you lost the
key, there is no way to retrieve the data short of attacking the crypto (and
twofish is pretty damn strong).
