To update basically means to replace existing files (mostly owned by root). This is why you need root access.
Sudo give users su privilages that can be on a per-command basis. But giving a user sudo access to, say, rpm or up2date and you might as well kiss your whole security policy good-by. rhnd is common and is probably less annoying and easier to maintain as it is standard on RH configurations. Cron'ing up2date is like a hack of this but without proper LogWatch support out-of-box. The root or su user should maintain the system or else your a car driving without a driver.
