To update basically means to replace existing files (mostly owned by
root). This is why you need root access.

Sudo give users su privilages that can be on a per-command basis. But
giving a user sudo access to, say, rpm or up2date and you might as well
kiss your whole security policy good-by.

rhnd is common and is probably less annoying and easier to maintain as it
is standard on RH configurations. Cron'ing up2date is like a hack of this
but without proper LogWatch support out-of-box.

The root or su user should maintain the system or else your a car driving
without a driver.

The above is all opinion and not biblical truth. Unless, of course, you
worship me.

Subject: [luau] How to RHN update w/o root pswd

Greetings,

What is the 'best' way for my users to update RedHat (ver. 9) on their
PCs?
As with RHN, synaptic requires knowing the password for root. Since I'm
not
giving them that, they cannot update. I've heard possibilities are to use
cron to perform an autoupdate or 'sudo'.

Thanks,
Blake
