CD+G/K-VCD MP3+G etc. are probably the unique things real players & 
software support.  Theres tons of freeware support for Windows in this 
area.

Forgive my ignorance, but is there a difference between a karaoke
machine and, say, a DVD player with an audio-input jack?

If none, it really opens up the possibilities because you would
only need a Linux-based media player to start.
